Water spreads faster than most people expect, and the damage compounds by the hour. Before anyone arrives:
Stop the water if you safely can. The main shut-off is usually in the garage, crawl space, or near the water heater. If the leak is above a ceiling, turn off water to that floor.

Newer construction on higher ground, so surface water is less of a problem. These are supply-line and appliance failures instead — a burst line to a fridge, a water heater in an upstairs closet, a washing machine hose.
